People think branding stops at the logo. The logo is maybe a tenth of it. A real identity is a system — a set of decisions, documented once, that lets everything you make look unmistakably yours. Here's what's actually inside.

The marks

Not one logo, but a small family: the primary wordmark, a symbol or monogram for tight spaces (a favicon, an avatar), and the rules for clear space, minimum size and what not to do. A mark you can only use one way isn't finished.

Colour

A defined palette with exact values and, more importantly, ratios. A common luxury formula: a dominant neutral, a light surface, and one accent used sparingly. The rule matters as much as the colours — "5% accent" prevents the rainbow drift that makes brands look cheap.

Typography

The typefaces, and the jobs they do. Usually a display face for headlines, a body face for reading, and sometimes a mono face for labels and numbers. The system says which size, which weight, which spacing — so every page sets type the same way.

Voice and tone

How the brand writes. Short or lyrical? Formal or warm? Does it use exclamation marks? (Strong brands usually don't.) Voice is half of identity and the half most companies forget to define — so their words sound like a different company than their visuals.

Graphic language

The textures and devices that recur: a particular grid, a signature shape, the way photography is shot and framed, how motion behaves. These are the fingerprints that make work recognisable even with the logo removed.

Application

Finally, the system shows itself in use — on a website, an invoice, a card, a social post. This is where guidelines become real, and where you discover whether the system actually holds together. (Ours does; you're reading it.)

Why document all this

Because brands are built by many hands over time — you, a designer, an intern, increasingly an AI assistant. The documented system is what lets all of them produce on-brand work without guessing. It's the asset that keeps your brand coherent as you grow.
